安德魯．V．麥克拉倫執導的本片講述一名曾在南非作戰的雇傭兵軍官（理查德．伯頓飾），受職率領一個敢死隊往南非營救一名遭政敵禁錮的黑人領袖（羅杰．摩爾飾），但任務成功后才發現被出賣。故事交代流暢，動作場面刺激，敢死隊高空跳下在空中飄浮的鏡頭處理頗為精采，可惜對政客的丑陋面目未能作更深入的探討。本片于四年后推出續集《魔雁突擊隊》，但成績已不如前。
